This is a Sunbeam - I think the 1924 2-litre San Sebastian GP car, driven by Kenelm Lee Guinness. I think that is KLG in the photo. Registration number is DA 8667.

It is KLG and the mechanic is his regular partner Bill Perkins. If it is DA8667 then KLG crashed it in the San Sebastian GP and his mechanic Jack Barratt was fatally injured. Bill Perkins was still in hospital suffering from injuries sustained after the crash at Brooklands a month before when Dario Resta was killed during a long-distance record attempt at Brooklands driving DA 8420.

More details: This is one of three 2-litre unsupercharged cars built in 1923 for the French Grand Prix. Henry Segrave won the event, becoming the first Englishman to win this event in a British car. All three cars were rebuilt in 1924 on lowered chassis, and now supercharged. This is the form as photograhed here. The three cars were registered DA 8420, DA 8666 & DA 8667. They all retired from the 1924 French Grand Prix with magneto trouble. Dario Resta was killed in DA 8666 at Brooklands, the other two cars competed in the Spanish Grand Prix at San Sebastian in September 1924. Segrave again won, in DA 8420, Kenelm Lee Guiness crashed in this car DA 8667. DA 8667 was later campaigned by Kaye Don, became known as The Cub, and has survived in the Beaulieu Museum. DA 8420 was raced by May Cunliffe, and Jack Dunfee, then went to Ireland, and is now in the Ulster Folk Transport Museum. DA 8666 was raced by E L Bouts in the 1930s. The remains were owned by Denis Jenkinson in the 1960s, and presumably also still survives in some form.

I would question the 1924 cars being built on the 1923 chassis. Mike, would you be good enough to give me a call - 01458 274700
