The Type 43s do seem to have had a rather distressing tendency to attempt self destruction. After Eyston's pyrotechnics earlier, Field came into the pits to refuel in the latter stages of the race when "without a moment's warning, there was a flash and the car was a mass of flames. A rush was made for the fire extinguishers and the car was saved, at any rate, from sharing the fate of (Campbell's 1928) Tourist Trophy Bugatti".
