Julian Hunt According to information I have Ewelme Down was used by the Oxford Universty Club for Inter Varsity events. The 1931 edition used photo-electric cell timing.

Julian Hunt At the time of the Inter-Varsity climb the estate was owned by Mrs Harwood-Murray and a little more research has thrown up the fact that the estate was later owned by the novelist Evelyn Waugh between 1937-1956. It was sold in 2005 for £12M.

I have a photo of my late father competing in a hill climb at Ewelme Doune on February 28th 1931 in a car numbered 64 & finished 2nd in a time of 50.702 seconds. His name was Leslie William Spratt. Can you throw any more light/info on this for me ?- I'd be most grateful & look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards, Jenny Mercer

I have a page from The Light Car and Cyclecar dated 6th March 1931 which gives a brief report of this event. I think Leslie Spratt must have come second in the up to 1100cc class which was won by M.Faulkner (Cantab) in a MG Midget with the time of 50.60 secs. Fastest Time of the Day and a course record went to J.Robinson (Cantab) in a Brescia Bugatti in 39.39 secs, who overturned after crossing the finishing line having set this time. Later he appeared 'bruised but smiling'.
