I seem to remember from somewhere that he was able to arrange for very short registration numbers to suit the Amilcars that he was the agent for and that he was instrumental in the getting the GW 82 number for Chaplin.

Re GW 82, that seems feasible; certainly all the surviving Vernon Balls supplied Amilcars have two letter/two number registrations, and I, too, have heard/read that this was a distinguishing feature of his cars.

Had an afternoon with Phillip Marriage in the 70's, he raced a Production Ulster in 31/32. He and his brother in law Searle were friends of Vernon Ball and when Marriage bought his car Vernon supplied a no GH23. Marriage said that Vernon had a series of London 2 letter 2 Number registrations reserved primarily for Amilcars for whom he was an agent so the no plate would fit between the dumbirons. When Searle bought an Ex works TT Austin thru his contact with Capt Waite that to got a 2 letter 2 number reg GW82. It was not Chaplin who owned the car later who obtained the number. David Howe
