This is Vernon Balls in his skiff bodied 970cc C type Amilcar on the occasion of his first win at Brooklands when as "S Vernon" he entered the Essex MC Junior Short Handicap which he won on 2nd June 1923

Presumably the "KN" on the side is a repeat of the "hot as pepper" joke which Vauxhall had used on their streamlined single-seater in 1909? No disrespect to Mr B, but he doesn't exactly give the impression of being a gentleman who would put up with such levity!

A member of the Balls family have stated the letters KN were in fact Vernon Balls wife's initials.
